What We Do
At In Her Presence, our programs are spaces for growth, connection, and belonging. Every offering is shaped with input from participants themselves, ensuring that what we do is relevant to real needs and responsive to real lives. Whether in a classroom, a coaching session, or a community gathering, our programs are designed to build confidence, expand opportunity, and strengthen the fabric of Maine’s communities.
Below, you can explore the different ways we do this:

In Her Presence was founded to center the voices and experiences of immigrant women, who are often among the most underserved in our communities. Women frequently face intersecting barriers: language access, childcare responsibilities, and cultural isolation and these limit opportunities not just for themselves, but for their families as a whole. By prioritizing women, we support those who are most often the key to lifting entire households, creating ripple effects that strengthen families and communities alike.
However, our programs are not limited exclusively to women. Men and family members are welcome to enroll, but when space is limited priority is given to women. This ensures that those with the greatest barriers to access receive the support they need first, while still creating space for shared learning and community growth.
While women remain at the heart of our mission, we believe that inclusive programming ensures no one is left behind.
Empowering Immigrant Women
Program FAQs
Are men allowed to participate in IHP programs?
Yes, men and family members are welcome in many (but not all) of our programs. However, priority for enrollment is always given to women.
Do you need specific status or work authorization to enroll?
We do not require work permits or specific legal status for joining our community. We offer programming for immigrants at all stages of their immigration process. However, some of our specific programs and services may only be applicable for individuals who have already acquired their work authorization.
Can people outside of Portland attend IHP programs?
While the majority of our work takes place in the Greater Portland area, we also host satellite programs in other parts of the state of Maine. We also provide online programming, making many of our offerings accessible to participants who live farther away.
How do participants enroll?
Enrollment typically happens through referrals, word of mouth, and outreach in immigrant communities. We keep registration simple and accessible, and many participants hear about our programs directly from current or former participants. They simply complete an interest form and then have a one-to-one intake call with one of our Program Coordinators.
Do you charge for your programs?
Our services are free to participants, thanks to donor support, grants, and community partnerships. This ensures that cost is never a barrier to access.
Is enrollment ongoing?
Yes and no. We have a programs calendar that outlines when enrollment opens. Courses that have enrollment have sign up dates that are advertised, after which the enrollment period closes. However, we have ongoing options that occur throughout the year that participants can engage with.
